Men accused of killing British teen Scarlett Keeling acquitted, mother says she will appeal decision
Fiona MacKeown said she was disappointed with the Goa court's verdict.
A Goa court on Friday acquitted two men accused of sexually assaulting and murdering United Kingdom teenager Scarlett Keeling in 2008, reported ANI. The 15-year-old’s partially clothed body was found on Anjuna beach. Placido Carvalho, 48, and Samson D'Souza, 37, were tracked down by the police soon after.
The British teeanager's mother, Fiona MacKeown, said she was disappointed with the verdict. She said they would appeal and "definitely move to the higher court" against the judgment, reported BBC. "There’s never been any justice for a tourist murdered in this country. The attitude is, if you go out at night wearing shorts, you deserve to be raped and murdered,” she said. according to The Guardian. Before the hearing, MacKeown had told The Telegraph that she hoped the accused suffered “in a horrible Indian prison for the rest of their lives”.
Keeling was on a six-month-long family vacation when the incident took place. She hailed from Bideford in Devon, United Kingdom. Initially, the police put her death down to an accident. However, after her mother pushed for a second autopsy, they found that she had been drugged and raped. The case had made international news and sparked widespread debate on drugs and crime in India's tourism industry.
