An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck off the Philippines' Mindanao island on Saturday, reported Reuters. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake was centered 114 km east of Davao. It initially recorded 6.5 on the scale.

The earthquake occurred 69 km below the seabed, however, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that it is not expected to trigger a tsunami. Renato Solidum, head of the Philippines' seismic agency, said that though it was a powerful quake, its effects would be mitigated by location and depth. "The quake is offshore and relatively deep and shaking is reported to be maximum of Intensity V, hence we expect no significant damage," he said.

Following the earthquake, hotels and construction sites were evacuated by the local administration. The country records frequent earthquakes because it is located in the geologically active Pacific Ring of Fire region.
