Cricket: Dominant New Zealand bowlers restrict India at 239/7 on Day 1 of 2nd Test
Cheteshwar Pujara (87) and Ajinkya Rahane (77) were the top scorers for the hosts.
India finished Day 1 of the 2nd Test against New Zealand at 239/7 at Kolkata's Eden Gardens stadium. Kiwi bowlers, led by the returning Matt Henry (3/35), clearly got the better of the Indian batsmen, while Cheteshwar Pujara (87) and Ajinkya Rahane (77) led the hosts with fine knocks and a 141-run partnership.
On a pitch that favoured spin and pace, Ross Taylor led his troops admirably as New Zealand bowlers struck at regular intervals. Shikhar Dhawan, who was chosen over Gautam Gambhir, was dismissed before he could score in double digits, as were Murali Vijay and skipper Virat Kohli.
Pujara and Rahane batted out the entire second session without losing their wickets. Jeetan Patel, who came in for the injured Mark Craig, sent Rohit Sharma and Rahane back to the pavilion with two excellent deliveries. Ravichandran Ashwin, who was looking fluent at the crease, was dismissed leg-before by Henry shortly before close of play.
