Centre launches scheme to provide TDS alerts via SMS to 2.5 crore salaried tax payers
The service, inaugurated by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, will later be expanded to include 4.4 crore non-salaried tax payers.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday launched the Income Tax Department's SMS alert facility providing Tax Deducted at Source updates for an estimated 2.5 crore salaried tax payers, PTI reported. The Central Board of Direct Taxes will soon offer this facility on a monthly basis and extend it to 4.4 crore non-salaried tax payers.
Jaitley said the facility will help the salaried class avoid unnecessary litigation. He said "They [tax payers] can match the office salary slip and the SMS at the end of the fiscal to be clear about any possible tax dues." The finance minister has also asked the CBDT to develop an online grievance redressal system for TDS-related problems.
