Indian businessman gets jail term for molesting teenager on Manchester-bound flight
Suman Das, who now lives in Doha, will have to spend 20 weeks in a UK prison and pay a fine of a £115 (Rs 9,364 approximately).
An Indian businessman, who now lives in Qatar, has been arrested for sexually assaulting a teenage girl on a Manchester-bound flight. The Manchester Magistrates' Court found Suman Das guilty last week, and ordered his arrest on Thursday. He has been sentenced to a 20-week jail term. He will also have to pay a fine of £115 (Rs 9,364 approximately), PTI reported.
The incident took place in July when Das was flying from Doha to Manchester. The 18-year-old complainant said Das touched her inappropriately when she was half-asleep in her seat. The woman had told the court that Das was aware of what he was doing. "He was looking at me. He moved very quickly once he saw that I was awake." The girl had narrated her ordeal to a cabin crew member also. Das' wife was sitting next to him on the flight when the incident took place. After the hearing, Judge Sam Goozee said, “This was a sexual assault in circumstances where you took advantage of the victim.”
Although Das initially denied the charges, he later said, "I may have touched accidentally, but I didn't touch her intentionally." The 46-year-old businessman will have to stay in the UK for one year after his release from jail as part of a post-sentence supervision.
