"We will reclaim our country's destiny," business tycoon Donald Trump said in his first address as the United States president-elect on Tuesday. Assuming a measured tone, Trump began by congratulating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. "I have just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She congratulated us on our victory, and I congratulated her and her family on a very hard-fought campaign."

Trump then appeared to pull back on the rhetoric of his entire campaign, which was marred by allegations of racism, misogyny and Islamophobia, talking of his plans to build a united country. "I pledge to every citizen that I will be president for all Americans and this is so important to me." Trump said his was not a campaign "but rather an incredible and great movement, comprised of Americans of all races, religions, backgrounds and beliefs."

Trump thanked members of his family, others from the Republican party, including former candidate Chris Christie, and his running mate Mike Pence, among others who aided him in his campaign.

Trump ended his speech by hinting at a possible run for a second term, saying, "Hopefully at the end of two, four or maybe even eight years, you will say that this [voting for him] was something you were very proud to do".

I can only say, that while the campaign is over, our work on this movement is really just beginning. We’re going to be doing a job that you will be so proud of your president. It’s been an amazing evening, and I love this country. Thank you very much."

Pence had earlier introduced him saying, “This is a historic night. The American people have spoken, and the American people have elected their new champion.”
