An Indian-American man has been sentenced to 40 months in prison in Chicago for trying to go to Syria to join the Islamic State group. Mohammed Hazra Khan, 21, had admitted to providing support to the militant group and trying to go to Syria with his teenaged brother and sister to join the outfit, reported PTI.
Federal Judge John J Tharp sentenced Khan time in prison for his links to the outfit, and ordered intensive supervision for 20 years after his release. He will also have to undergo “violent extremism counselling” and enroll for a mental health treatment programme, IANS reported.
He was arrested from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport in 2014 when he was trying to leave the country with his brother and sister. Khan is an American citizen, born in New York. His family had immigrated from India. In 2015, his mother had said, “The venom spewed by these groups [such as Islamic State] and the violence committed by them find no support in the Quran and are completely at odds with our Islamic faith.” She had asked the group to leave her son alone.
