Demonetisation: Delhi High Court dismisses plea against Rs 2.5 lakh withdrawal limit for weddings
The bench had earlier said that the government has provided a 'relaxation' wherever necessary on the issue of demonetisation.
The Delhi High Court has dismissed a petition seeking relaxation of the Rs 2.5 lakh withdrawal limit for marriages, PTI reported on Wednesday. The RBI notification stating the withdrawal cap came on November 21, days after the Centre demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
The plea filed by Birender Sangwan had termed the RBI guidelines limiting money withdrawal as “arbitrary”. One of the guidelines under this RBI notification said that the cash withdrawn shall be used to make payment only to those persons who do not have bank accounts and a declaration from such recipients on the same. The application for withdrawal also required the bride and groom to provide their details.
On November 28, the high court reserved its verdict on the plea saying the government had provided a “relaxation” wherever necessary on the demonetisation issue. Addition Solicitor General Sanjay Jain, appearing for the Centre, had told the bench, “For weddings, if we will not put conditions, anybody can get a marriage card printed and go to the bank to withdraw Rs 2.5 lakh.”
The Supreme Court is also hearing a series of petitions filed against the demonetisation move by the Centre. The Modi government on the night of November 8 demonetised Rs 500, Rs 1,000 notes following which the country has been facing severe cash crunch.
