Pakistan: At least 11 people killed, 45 others injured in fire at Karachi hotel
Some of the victims used bedsheets to escape the hotel, which officials said had 'no fire exits or fire alarms'.
At least 11 people died and more than 45 others were injured in a fire that destroyed the Karachi Regent Plaza hotel in Pakistan’s Shahrah-i-Faisal on Monday, Dawn reported. Officials said the fire started in the upscale hotel’s kitchen, which was located on the ground floor. However, the cause had not been confirmed yet.
Fire officials said some people used bed sheets to escape the fire that took firefighters three hours to douse, a statement issued by the Saddar Police Station said.
Karachi mayor Waseem Akhtar said the hotel had “no fire exits or fire alarms”. Dr Seemin Jamali from the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre told the Pakistani daily that 65 people affected by the fire were treated at the emergency cell for fractures, glass cuts and smoke inhalation. Chief Fire Officer Tehseen Siddiqui told Dawn that the hotel had been evacuated. He said that the lack of ventilators led to most of the victims “suffocating to death”.
