Two sailors dead after Indian Navy warship INS Betwa tips over at Mumbai dockyard
At least 14 personnel have sustained injuries in the incident that took place when the guided missile frigate was being returned to water from a refit.
Two sailors died and 14 other sustained injuries when Indian Navy’s guided missile frigate INS Betwa tipped over at the Mumbai dockyard on Monday, reported NDTV. Indian Navy spokesperson DK Sharma said, “This is a very big situation for the navy as this has never happened before...The incident occurred during undocking evolution wherein it is suspected that dock blocks mechanism failed.”
The indigenous 3,850-tonne ship tipped over while being returned to water from a refit. The Indian Navy said the incident took place because of a technical snag, and ordered an inquiry, The Hindu reported.
“INS Betwa undergoing refit at Naval dockyard Mumbai slipped on dock blocks, extent of damage being assessed,” Sharma said. The ship is armed with Uran anti-ship missiles and Barak 1 surface-to-air missiles, an NDTV report said, adding that the ship was lying on its side in the water.
