Tamil film Visaaranai (interrogation) has fallen out of the 2017 Oscar race for Best Foreign Language Film, its director Vetri Maaran said on Friday. The film, which looks at issues of police corruption and custodial violence, was chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars in September.

The film is not among the nine that made it to the final shortlist, which Maaran posted on Twitter. These include Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman and Norwegian filmmaker Erik Poppe’s The King’s Choice. In September, Film Federation of India Secretary General Supran Sen had said that the body had unanimously chosen Visaaranai as India’s official entry.
