The Ahmedabad Police have booked an NRI couple for conspiring to murder their adopted son for insurance money, PTI reported on Wednesday. The couple, who live in London, allegedly adopted 13-year-old Gopal and got him life insurance worth Rs 1.20 crore, only to later kill him for the money.

The teenager, who was stabbed by unknown assailants on February 8, succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

The police said the couple conspired with one Nitish Mund, who also used to live in London till his visa expired and he returned to India. Mund paid Rs 5 lakh each to the assailants for the attack. It was after his arrest on Monday that the involvement of the child’s adoptive parents in the case came to the fore.

The incident had taken place in Keshod, Junagadh district, when Gopal was returning from Rajkot to his home town Maliya with Mund and two others. The minor had been living with Mund.

“Arti and Kanwaljit Sinh conspired with one Nitish Mund to adopt Gopal [13], get him insured and then kill him so that they could get insurance money. Nitish, who also lived in London before shifting here after his visa expired, had planned along with the couple since 2015 to kill Gopal,” said Keshod police inspector Ashok Tilva.
