Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday likened Mayawati to United States President Donald Trump, then said that he meant to make the comparison between him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi instead.

Talking presumably about the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Swamy tweeted, “In UP, I think Mayawati will pull off a Donald Trump.” Trump had won the US elections in November despite widespread predictions of a victory for his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Two hours later Swamy said he had meant to say that it was Modi who would “pull of” a Trump, and not Mayawati. “In my tweet on UP elections, I had intended to say Namo. Instead by oversight I said Mayawati. Error is regretted,” he tweeted.

On February 9, while addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi had also compared Modi to Trump. “The US had recently elected Donald Trump in the seat, but India had a Trump in the form of Modi two-and-a-half years ago,” Gandhi had said.
