Only male panelists were allowed on stage for Saudi Arabia's first ever 'Girls Council' meet
Women members participated in the event through video link from another room.
Saudi Arabia, known for its repressive rules against women, has formed a council to address issues faced by women, but only male panelists appear to be allowed on stage to participate in its discussions. The inaugural meeting of the Qassim Girls Council was held in al-Qassim province on Monday, and the photos from the event show only a group of 13 men on the stage. The women were in another room, taking part in the process through a video link, reported BBC.
The photos from the event have gone viral on social media, with several people pointing out their stark similarity with that of United States President Donald Trump, surrounded by men, signing an abortion policy in January.
Saudi Prince Faisal bin Mishal bin Saud attended the meeting. “In the Qassim region, we look at women as sisters to men,” he said. “We feel a responsibility to open up more and more opportunities that will serve the work of women and girls.” His wife, who chairs the council, was not seen in photographs either, reported The Independent. Saudi Arabia also celebrated Women’s Day for the first time in its history in February.
