A 25-year-old sea turtle in Thailand, who had made news for swallowing as many as 915 coins thrown into her pond by tourist, is in “very serious” condition after she underwent surgery, Bangkok Post. Veterinarian Nantarika Chansue, who led the team of doctors that carried out the surgery, in a Facebook post said the turtle had not woken up since its second operation on Saturday.

Om Sin underwent her first surgery on March 6 when the coins weighing five kilograms were taken out from her stomach. However, a check up on Saturday revealed that she was having a stomach ache due to complications from the surgery.

The veterinarians then performed an emergency operation on her to remove the hitch in the intestines and reduce the amount of gas. Om Sin has been recovering in the ICU and her condition is “very serious”, Chansue, a scientist at Chulalongkorn University, said.

The turtle had swallowed the coins thrown in a pond by tourists when it was in Koh Loy in Sri Racha district near Bangkok. The coins formed a five kilogram weight that cracked her shell, AP reported. Om Sin in Thai means piggy bank.
