At least two people were killed and six others were seriously injured when a massive fire broke out at a hotel in Kolkata’s Ho Chi Minh Sarani early on Thursday morning. Guests Anup Agarwal and Jugalkishore Gupta, both from Odisha, suffered severe burns injuries and died later at SSKM Hospital, reported PTI.

As many as nine fire tenders were sent to the spot around 3 am to douse the blaze. The firefighters rescued more than 30 people, including the staff at Golden Park Hotel. Around 9 am, the blaze was under control, fire service officers told The Times of India.

Although the cause of the fire has not been ascertained, fire officials said that they suspect a short circuit in the kitchen to be the reason. “The situation is under control. The reason of the fire can be comprehended only after forensic investigations,” a fire brigade official told IANS.

The blaze soon spread to the other parts of the hotel, which is close to the American Consulate and the British High Commission. Firefighters and disaster management officials had to break open the glass window panes of the hotel, reported NDTV.
