Parents of girl who was raped accuse Delhi school of not letting her attend classes
In a complaint to the DCW, they alleged that the institute fears its ‘name will be spoiled’ and has threatened to not promote the student to Class 11.
The parents of a Class 10 student who was raped have accused a private school of “gross insensitivity” for not allegedly allowing their child to attend classes, claiming it would tarnish the institute’s name. “The administration feels that the name of their school will be spoiled if the victim comes to school every day,” the parents alleged in an complaint to the Delhi Commission for Women, Hindustan Times reported.
The girl was kidnapped, raped and thrown out of a moving car a few months ago. In their complaint, her parents have claimed that the administration has refused to “take any responsibility for the girl’s safety” and said they will promote her to Class 11 only if she stops attending classes.
The DCW has issued a notice to the Education Department on the basis of the complaint. “The parents have alleged that the school administration is harassing the girl in various manners so she stops going to school on her own accord,” the commission said, according to The Indian Express.
Chairperson of the DCW Swati Maliwal said they had given the government five days to investigate the allegations and submit a report. “This is a very serious matter. The girl is being punished for no fault of hers and it is a very embarrassing and unacceptable matter in today’s world”.
