The government on Tuesday came out in support of the “punitive assaults” that the Indian Army said it had conducted along the Line of Control with Pakistan, PTI reported. Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said such actions were needed to ensure peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Government supports the actions of Indian Army across LoC. Such actions are needed to ensure peace in J&K,” Jaitley said on Twitter. “[The] Indian Army is taking preemptive and measured actions to counter terrorism in Valley and disengage Pak posts across LoC supporting infiltration.”

The Army on Tuesday said that they had carried out punitive artillery assaults along the Line of Control to deal with “infiltration attempts supported by Pakistani firing” in the Nowshera region. Pakistan has, however, denied the claim. The assault is believed to be in retaliation to alleged mutilation of bodies of two soldiers by the Pakistani Army on May 1.
