Tamil Nadu: Eight killed, three injured after bus depot roof collapses in Nagapattinam
The victims – seven drivers and a bus conductor – were employees of the state transport cooperation.
Eight people died in Nagapattinam district’s Porayar in Tamil Nadu after the roof of a restroom at a bus depot collapsed early on Friday. The victims were employees of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, The Hindu reported.
Chief Minister Edapaddi Palaniswami has announced compensation of Rs 7.5 lakh for the next of kin of the dead and a government job for one member of each family. Those who sustained severe injuries will get Rs 1.5 lakh, and those with mild injuries will get Rs 50,000.
Three people were were pulled out from under the debris and taken to a government hospital in Karaikal. The victims – seven drivers and a bus conductor – were asleep when the roof collapsed, according to The News Minute.
The Fire and Rescue Service has retrieved all the bodies from the debris. The structure was built 60 years ago and was in need of repairs, The Hindu quoted unidentified officials as saying.
Tamil Nadu Transport Minister MR Vijayabhaskar confirmed the toll while speaking to reporters. He said he was told that the building collapsed because it was “very old”. The families of the victims will be given compensation.
