UP: Police to verify details of all passport holders in Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar
The police said they have received inputs that a few terror modules could be hiding in the two districts.
The Uttar Pradesh Police will conduct a drive to verify the details of all passport holders in the districts of Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar, The Times of India reported on Tuesday. The police believe terror modules could be hiding in the two districts.
This comes after the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad arrested a Bangladeshi national from Muzaffarnagar, who is believed to be a member of the Ansarullah Bangla Team. Abdullah Al-Mamon lived in Deoband and allegedly dealt in fake identity cards for militants. He had also managed to get his Aadhaar card and passport made, the police had said.
“It is not only about Deoband or any particular community,” Deputy Inspector General of Police, Saharanpur, KS Emmanuel told The Times of India. “The verification of passport holders will take place in entire Muzaffarnagar and Saharanpur owing to inputs we have received that a few terror modules could be hiding in the area. There have been a few instances in the past when men with questionable credentials were found here.”
Superintendent of Police Babloo Kumar said the verification drive will be conducted in six different areas, including Deoband. “These are areas where several people from outside Saharanpur district have settled,” Kumar told The Indian Express. “Police team of concerned police station will assist officials of Local Intelligence Unit in the drive.”
