Bangladesh: Pilot, three others arrested for planning to fly plane into houses of government leaders
The police said that the four men had links with militant group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh Police on Wednesday arrested a pilot with the national carrier and three others for suspected terrorism offences, the Dhaka Tribune reported. The pilot with Bangladesh Biman was identified as Sabbir Enam.
The special security force of the Bangladesh Police, the Rapid Action Battalion, said that Enam and the three others were planning an attack using an aircraft, and they had links with the militant group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh.
Mufti Mahmud Khan of the Rapid Action Battalion said that Enam also “had plans to take a flight, keep passengers as hostage, [and head] to some Middle Eastern country,” according to Reuters. The group wanted to fly a plane into the residences of top government leaders, the police added.
Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen was reportedly formed in 1998, and was banned in Bangladesh in February 2005. Its members have been accused of attacking secular bloggers across the country. In 2005, it detonated 500 bombs at 300 locations across Bangladesh.
