A Dalit woman in Hyderabad died of a heart attack during a clash with police in front of the collector’s office on Monday, the Hindustan Times reported.

D Bharati was among the protestors from the Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi, an organisation demanding that people from Scheduled Caste communities in Telangana be divided into four sub-groups. The Madigas are among the groups asking the government for their share of reservation in jobs and education.

On Monday, Bharati was among the hundreds of protestors who heeded the call by Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi founder Manda Krishna Madiga to stage protests at collectorate offices across the state to exert pressure on the state and central governments to expedite the process, The New Indian Express reported.

The police, who sought to end the protest in front of the Hyderabad Collectorate, started arresting the agitators. Soon, a minor scuffle broke out between the activists and the police. That is when Bharathi fell, complaining of chest pain. She was taken to the Osmania General Hospital, where doctors declared that she had died.
