Security forces killed three Lashkar-e-Taiba militants in Magam area of North Kashmir’s Handwara district, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police SP Vaid said on Tuesday. He added that all three were from Pakistan.

The firing began on Tuesday morning when the security forces were conducting a cordon and search operation, News18 reported. The operation is still under way and more details are awaited.

On Sunday, the Army had said that in 2017 it had killed 125 to 130 militants in the “hinterland” of the Kashmir Valley and 190 militants in the whole of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Handwara operation comes just days after the security forces killed six militants in an encounter in Hajin area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district. One Indian Air Force Garud commando was also killed in the encounter while two Army personnel were injured.

On Monday, a militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in the forest area of Tral in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
