The administration at Chennai’s Sathyabama University have decided to not reopen the institute till January 2 after violence erupted on Wednesday night because a first-year student, who was allegedly caught cheating during an examination, committed suicide, The Hindu reported.

“All the exams due for one week have been postponed to January,” the daily quoted an unidentified administration official as saying.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the family of Duvvuru Monica Reddy, whose death triggered the protests, received her body after autopsy at the government hospital in Chennai’s Royapettah area, The Deccan Chronicle reported. The girl’s father, Raja Reddy, has reportedly filed a complaint against the university management under CrPC Section 174, which requires the police to investigate cases of suicide.

Reddy was reportedly caught copying during a chemistry examination and some reports suggested that the invigilator who caught her humiliated her. “The invigilator informed other officials and she was asked to leave the hall,” a police officer was quoted as saying. She reportedly went back to her hostel and sent her twin Rakesh, who was also writing an examination, a text message. He found her hanging in her hostel room when he went to check on her.
