The body of one of the five soldiers, who went missing during an avalanche on December 11 in Jammu and Kashmir’s Naugam sector in Kupwara district, has been recovered, NDTV reported. The rescue teams have not yet found any sign of the others.

The Army on Sunday paid tribute to Sepoy Koushal Singh of the 33 Rashtriya Rifles, India Today reported.

Singh and another jawan from went missing from Naugam late at night on December 11 during patrol duty. They reportedly slipped from a slope. Meanwhile in the Gurez sector of Bandipora district, three soldiers were buried under the snow when an avalanche struck a forward post.

The Army’s rescue teams from High Altitude Warfare School were deployed to trace the missing soldiers, but the search operations were hampered by heavy snowfall.

Twenty soldiers died in avalanches that struck Army camps in Gurez in January 2017. The Army guards forward posts in such remote areas even in the dead of winter.
