Benchmark Indian indices ended higher on Monday after plunging when markets opened in the morning, as the Bharatiya Janata Party looked on course to win the Assembly elections in both Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

The BSE Sensex opened 531.93 points lower, and the NSE Nifty fell 217.30 points to 10,115.95. But the Sensex ended 138.71 points up at 33,601.68 and Nifty gained 55.50 points, ending at 10,388.75.

Mahindra & Mahindra, Cipla, Sun Pharmaceuticals, the State Bank of India and Wipro were the top gainers on the BSE. The five stocks that lost the most were Coal India, Infosys, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Kotak Mahindra and Tata Motors DVR.

On the Nifty, Vedanta, Hindalco, Cipla, Mahindra & Mahindra and Sun Pharma were the top gainers, and Yes Bank, Hindustan Petroleum Corp, Tech Mahindra, Coal India and UPL were the biggest losers.

The rupee was trading at 64.21 to the United States dollar at 3.57 pm, 0.27% down.

All other major Asian stock markets also rose on Monday. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.55%, and the Hong Kong Hang Seng 0.70%. The Taiwan and Shanghai indices closed marginally higher.
