Jammu and Kashmir: Two suspected militants gunned down in Shopian, woman dies in ensuing clashes
Eight people were injured in the clashes that broke out between villagers and the security forces.
Security forces killed two suspected terrorists in a gunfight in the Shopian district in South Kashmir on Tuesday, Kashmir Director General of Police SP Vaid said.
Soldiers from the 44 Rashtriya Rifles and the Special Operations Group of the police launched a cordon-and-search operation at Batmuran village after receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants there, the Global News Service agency reported.
One suspected militant, however, escaped as the cordon was being laid, Inspector General of Police Muneer Khan told ANI.
Clashes reportedly broke out between villagers and the security forces after the local mosque made an announcement, urging people to come out of their houses and protest.
A woman died after being hit by a bullet during the clashes, Greater Kashmir reported. The 24-year-old, Beauty Jan, was hit by a bullet in her abdomen, and was sent to a hospital but died on the way.Eight people were injured, and are undergoing treatment at local hospitals.
In November, the Indian Army had said that it had gunned down 190 militants in 2017 across Jammu and Kashmir.
