Guatemala to shift its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem
The announcement was made by President Jimmy Morales on Monday in a Facebook post.
Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales on Monday announced in a Facebook post that he had ordered that his country’s embassy in Israel be moved to Jerusalem.
“Today I spoke with the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu,” said Morales. “We were talking about the excellent relations that we have had as nations since Guatemala supported the creation of the state of Israel. One of the most important topics was the return of the embassy of Guatemala to Jerusalem,” Morales wrote.
Guatemala was one of the nine nations to vote against a UN resolution urging the United States to change its decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
On December 22, Netanyahu told CNN that “several countries” were considering moving their embassies to Jerusalem.
