A shoe was thrown at former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday at the Jamia Naeemia university in Lahore. The audience caught and beat up the culprit immediately, and security took him into custody, Dawn reported.

The incident took place right after Sharif took to the dais to address the ceremony commemorating death anniversary of Islamic Cleric Mufti Mohammad Hussain Naeemi. A video of the episode shows the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief taken aback by the act.

The security agency at the venue is trying to ascertain the identity of the man who hurled the shoe at Sharif. Pakistan Today reported that the man was identified as Talha Munawwar, a former student of Jamia Naeemia and believed to be a member of the Tehreek-e-Labaik Ya Rasool Allah group. He was taken to a hospital because of injuries he sustained after the audience beat him up.

The attack on Sharif comes a day after an unidentified man threw ink at Pakistani Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif in Sialkot. Asif was addressing party workers at a convention when the man smeared his face with ink from behind. Workers of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz thrashed him, but Asif forgave him for the act, saying he had no enmity with the man, Dawn reported.
