Uttar Pradesh: Woman publicly flogged in Bulandshahr on panchayat’s orders
The police arrested the woman’s husband Shaudan Singh, former panchayat head Shersingh and his son Shravan after a video of the assault went viral.
A woman was publicly flogged by her husband on the orders of a village panchayat in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr, The Hindu reported on Thursday. The woman was assaulted because she had eloped with another man.
The police arrested the woman’s husband Shaudan Singh, former panchayat head Shersingh and his son Shravan on Thursday after a video of the assault went viral on social media, said Bulandshhr Superintendent of Police Praveen Ranjan Singh. He added that the police have registered a case against 18 people after they received a copy of the video clip.
The incident took place at Launga village, about 400 km from state capital Lucknow, on March 10, the Hindustan Times reported. In the 73-second clip, the husband whips the woman, who is tied to a tree, with a belt as a crowd looks on. After the assault, former panchayat head Shersingh and his supporters allegedly molested her, reported the Hindustan Times.
The police said the village panchayat wanted to “teach a lesson to the woman”.
