A five-year-old boy was found dead inside an abandoned car in Pune’s Chakan locality late on Monday. Karan Pandey got trapped inside the vehicle where he sought shelter from the heat while playing with his friends, NDTV reported. The police on Tuesday said he died of suffocation, and there were burn marks on his neck, face and head after he was trapped in the car for five to six hours.

Pandey had left home around noon to play with his friends from the same neighbourhood. His family and the police found him after a six-hour search.

“As per available details, the car accidentally got locked and the boy could not get out,” police officer Pratima Navale told IANS. “He remained trapped inside for nearly six hours before his body was found.”

The police have registered a case of accidental death, and say they do not know whom the car belongs to. It has reportedly been parked in the area for several weeks.
