Supreme Court extends bail for Teesta Setalvad, Javed Anand till May 31
The Gujarat government told the court that it did not intend to arrest the social activists for now.

The Supreme Court on Monday extended the anticipatory bail of social activists Teesta Setalvad and Javed Anand till May 31 in a case involving alleged misappropriation of funds, PTI reported. The Gujarat government told the court it did not intend to arrest the couple for now, according to The Times of India.
The Bombay High Court had on Thursday given them interim protection from arrest till May 2. They had approached the court seeking transit anticipatory bail as they were due to appear before the police in Ahmedabad on Friday.
The Gujarat Police had appealed against the Bombay High Court verdict, citing lack of jurisdiction, News18 reported.
The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has alleged that Setalvad and Anand, through their NGO Sabrang Trust, fraudulently secured central government funds amounting to Rs 1.4 crore between 2008 and 2013.
According to the crime branch, the funds were secured to provide education to poor children in Gujarat and Maharashtra and to help victims of the 2002 riots in Gujarat, but were instead allegedly used for other purposes.
