Dalit student found dead in his IIT-Kanpur hostel room
The police said they found what appeared to be a suicide note in the room, but that it was torn to pieces.
A student of the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur was found dead in his hostel room on Wednesday, PTI reported.
While it is unclear what led the student, Bhim Singh, to allegedly commit suicide, the police said they found a suicide note that was torn into pieces. The forensics team is examining it.
The institute’s Deputy Director Manindra Agarwal told The Times of India that Singh was a Dalit student doing a PhD in the department of mechanical engineering. “The reason behind his suicide is not clear. A letter, which appears to be a suicide note, has been recovered,” Agarwal said.
The police said they had to break down the door of his room, The New Indian Express reported. The Kalyanpur Police Station House Officer Satish Kumar Singh said they were waiting for the student’s parents to arrive before starting an autopsy.
