The Democratic Party on Friday sued the Russian government, United States President Donald Trump’s campaign team and WikiLeaks for conspiring to influence the 2016 presidential election, reported The Washington Post.

The Democratic National Committee, in its federal lawsuit filed in Manhattan, said top officials in Trump’s campaign team conspired with Moscow to hack Democratic Party computers. “During the 2016 presidential campaign, Russia launched an all-out assault on our democracy and it found a willing and active partner in Donald Trump’s campaign,” Tom Perez, the chairperson of the DNC, said according to Reuters. “This constituted an act of unprecedented treachery.”

After the lawsuit, Trump called the Democrats “obstructionist” and said he would come up with a counter to prove that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton had committed a crime with her personal email server. “This frivolous lawsuit is a last-ditch effort to substantiate the baseless Russian collusion allegations by a nearly-bankrupt Democratic Party still trying to counter the will of the people in the 2016 presidential election,” a statement from the Donald J Trump for President campaign said, according to BBC.

The president’s campaign manager Brad Parscale called the lawsuit a sham “about a bogus Russian collusion claim filed by a desperate, dysfunctional, and nearly insolvent Democratic Party”.

Trump has time and again denied that his campaign team colluded with Russia while Moscow too has rejected such conspiracy allegations.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s office, which is looking into the alleged Russian interference in the elections, had on February 17 charged 13 Russian nationals with attempting to interfere in the US elections. The investigators are inquiring into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian officials to influence the election.
