Armed robbers shot dead a newly-married woman after looting her and her husband of cash and jewellery on the Delhi-Dehradun National Highway in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district on Friday night, PTI reported.

The incident occurred near Matore village of Meerut when they were returning after getting married during a ceremony in Ghaziabad on Friday, the police said. The woman’s husband and four others of the wedding party were injured in the attack.

Senior Superintendent of Police Manjil Saini identified the dead woman as Farhana and said the police have launched an operation to arrest the perpetrators. The woman was taken to the Muzaffarnagar Medical College, but doctors declared her dead on arrival, the police said.

Saini said the police have identified the robbers’ car with the help of closed circuit television camera footage. “Four criminals were seen travelling in a car. They used a fake number plate,” she was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times. She added that the robbers may have wanted to rob the woman’s jewellery but it was not of real gold.
