Two Nationalist Congress Party workers were shot dead in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district on Saturday, three weeks after one of the party’s legislators, Sangram Jagtap, was arrested along with three others for the murder of two Shiv Sena leaders.

Unidentified gunmen on a bike shot dead 29-year-old district general secretary of the party’s youth wing, Yogesh Ralebhat, and Rakesh Ralebhat (28) at around 6.45 pm, The New Indian Express reported. The daily quoted an unidentified police official as saying that it did not appear to be a case of revenge killing.

The state has recently witnessed a spate of political killings On April 23, Shiv Sena leader Sachin Sawant was shot dead in Mumbai’s Kandivali suburb.

Shiv Sena’s deputy city head Sanjay Kotkar and local member Vasant Anand Thube were shot point blank on April 7 by two men on a motorcycle. They were murdered hours after the result of the civic bye-poll to Kedgaon was announced. Congress’ Vishal Kotkar defeated Shiv Sena nominee Vijay Pathare by only 454 votes.

The Shiv Sena had blamed other party leaders for the murders because of the widespread support the party had received in the bye-election.
