Mangalore Police rescue Kerala woman allegedly confined by mother over relationship with Muslim man
The woman claimed that her mother had detained her with support from the BJP.
The Karnataka Police have rescued a woman in Mangaluru who was allegedly confined at home by her mother for being in a relationship with a Muslim man, The Indian Express reported on Monday. The woman, who was identified as Anjali and is from Kerala, had released video clips pleading that she be rescued from a house in Mangaluru, following which the police rescued her on May 1.
In the video, Anjali alleged that her mother had confined her with support from the Bharatiya Janata Party. “I have suffered enough,” she said. “I am not allowed to go out. I am languishing in this situation as none has intervened to save me.”
Anjali claimed that her mother had admitted her to a hospital in Kochi in Kerala for treatment of a mental health condition. Nalakath Manas, the man she was in a relationship with, said Anjali contacted him two months ago after she got a mobile phone. She sent the video clippings through WhatsApp, which he later shared with the media, the Bangalore Mirror reported. “If something happens to me, my mother would be accountable for it,” she said in her video.
He said he had moved a haebus corpus petition in the Kerala High Court. “The court ordered police protection for the woman and her mother. The court also restrained me from meeting her,” he told The Indian Express.
The police said they are investigating the allegation that the BJP was involved in her confinement.
