Prices of petrol and diesel rose for the first time in 37 days in four metropolitan cities of the country. Petrol prices have been cut 22 times since May 29, and diesel rates 18 times, after both hit all-time highs earlier that month.

A litre of petrol in Delhi cost Rs 75.71 on Thursday, up from Rs 75.55 on Wednesday. The price of diesel rose from Rs 67.38 per litre to Rs 67.50 per litre on Thursday.

In Mumbai, petrol price rose from Rs 82.94 per litre on Wednesday to Rs 83.10 per litre on Thursday. The price of diesel increased from Rs 71.49 per unit to Rs 71.62 per unit. In Kolkata, the petrol rates increased from Rs 78.23 per litre on Wednesday to Rs 78.39 per litre on Thursday. The diesel price stood at Rs 70.05 per unit, up from Rs 69.93 per unit on Wednesday.

Chennai also witnessed an upward trend in fuel prices. The petrol price rose from Rs 78.40 per litre to Rs 78.57 per litre. A litre of diesel cost the customer Rs 71.24 on Thursday, against Rs 71.12 on Wednesday.

State-run oil marketing companies Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum revise prices every day at 6 am.
