Heavy rains lashed Goa on Friday morning, inundating many low-lying areas in the state and temporarily paralysing daily life. Water receded later on Friday in most areas after rainfall stopped.

Local media reported that the compound wall of the police quarters in Panaji’s Altinho locality collapsed because of the heavy downpour. Water entered many houses in the Mala neighbourhood too. Several houses in Raia village were flooded while the water level in the Valvonti river in North Goa is close to the danger mark, officials said. The bridge at Paroda in the South Goa town of Quepem was submerged, disrupting traffic on the route.

On Thursday, the India Meteorological Department predicted heavy rainfall in parts of the state and issued a red alert. The weather department also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea for the next 24 hours.
