Supreme Court favours live-streaming of court proceedings, Centre concurs
The court asked Attorney General KK Venugopal to submit proposed guidelines by July 23.
The Supreme Court on Monday said it favoured the live-streaming of all court proceedings, except those of rape cases, matrimonial disputes and in-camera hearings, Live Law reported. The Centre told the court that live-streaming can be undertaken.
A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud asked the parties to give suggestions to Attorney General KK Venugopal for framing guidelines to live-stream court proceedings, PTI reported. The court asked Venugopal to submit the detailed proposed guidelines by July 23.
On May 3, the court had asked the Centre for its response to pleas by advocate Indira Jaising and law student Swapnil Tripathi. The petitioners had sought live-streaming, video recording or transcription of judicial proceedings.
Jaising said in her petition that live telecast of proceedings will increase access to courts, and will “negate the chances of any misreporting, errors or second-hand information”. Tripathi sought the setting up of live-streaming rooms on Supreme Court premises and access for legal interns.
