The Jharkhand Police on Saturday released a video in which a Missionaries of Charity nun in Ranchi accused of selling babies purportedly confesses to her crime, NDTV reported.

In the video, Sister Konsalia is heard saying that three babies had been sold but the fourth infant was put up for adoption for free. Scroll.in could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.

Konsalia and Anima Indwar, an employee at the charity set up by Mother Teresa in 1950, were arrested on July 4 on the basis of a complaint filed by Child Welfare Committee’s Ranchi unit chief Rupa Verma.

“Three out of four children have been recovered,” Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Ashish Gupta told ANI.

Konsalia’s purported confession came days after the Roman Catholic Church claimed that the police were attempting to malign its image.

“There is a deliberate attempt being made to thwart and undo all good things done by us [missionaries and churches] over decades in serving mankind,” Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas, the general secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, told reporters on Thursday.

Mascarenhas said the church condemned the “whole incident” and was always open to any form of inquiry. But it was wrong to question the entire Missionaries of Charity and other missionary institutions, he added.
