The police in Kansas City, United States, on Sunday shot dead a man suspected of murdering Telangana student Sharath Koppu earlier this month.
Police officers shot the man after he opened fire at two undercover officers at the Sky-Vu Motel in the city, and then took refuge in a house. Three officers were also injured in the encounter, The Kansas City Star reported.
Detectives had been on the lookout for the suspect all week, Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith said. The neighbourhood around East 31st Street and Van Brunt Boulevard swarmed with helicopters, an armoured car, tactical teams and police officers as they attempted to capture the suspect on Sunday. Finally, he was confined to a home in the 2900 block of Topping Avenue and was killed in a shootout.
“This is the first time we laid eyes on him,” Smith said.
Koppu was a postgraduate student of software engineering at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He worked part-time at a restaurant, where he was shot dead during a suspected robbery attempt on July 6.
