Every vehicle in the national Capital, including those of top constitutional authorities, must display its registration number and abide by the law, the Delhi High Court said on Wednesday. The court asked the Centre and the Aam Aadmi Party government to ensure the registration of all cars at the earliest, PTI reported.

“There can be no manner of doubt that every vehicle has to comport to the Motor Vehicle Act and has to be registered with a registering authority and must display the registration number,” Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said.

The court was hearing a plea by a nonprofit Nyayabhoomi, which had asked it to direct the cars of constitutional authorities such as the president, the vice president, governors and the lieutenant governor to display their registration numbers.

Displaying the national emblem instead of the registration numbers makes the cars conspicuous and the dignitaries might become easy targets for terrorists or those wishing to harm them, the petitioner told the court.

The court disposed of the plea after noting that the Centre and the Delhi government had taken “some action” and hoped the entire process would be completed soon.

Earlier during the proceedings, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways told the court that it had asked various ministries and constitutional authorities to get their vehicles registered. The vice president’s secretariat reportedly told the government that its vehicles would soon display registration numbers. The Ministry of External Affairs has also promised to do the same, the ministry said.
