Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday criticised Congress President Rahul Gandhi for hugging him in Parliament during a debate on a no-confidence motion the day before. Modi was addressing a Kisan Kalyan Rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district.

At the end of his speech in the Lok Sabha on Friday, Gandhi walked up to the prime minister and hugged him. Modi was seemingly startled before offering Gandhi a handshake. As Gandhi returned to his seat, he was caught smiling broadly and winking at a colleague.

“We asked the reasons for their no-confidence, but when they failed to give a reason, they ended up giving a hug,” Modi said, referring to Gandhi. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government won the motion moved by the Telugu Desam Party by 199 votes.

The prime minister claimed that the the coming together of the Opposition against the Bharatiya Janata Party would only “help the lotus bloom”. “We are running to your homes with electricity, they are running towards us in Parliament with no-confidence papers,” Modi added.

He accused the Opposition of eyeing the prime minister’s chair. “Are you people satisfied with what happened yesterday in Lok Sabha...Have I done anything wrong?” Modi asked the people. “I am only working for the poor and the country... fighting corruption and this is my crime.”

This was the prime minister’s third visit to Uttar Pradesh in less than a month. He visited Azamgarh and Mirzapur last week to inaugurate infrastructure projects.
