Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday said he had invited United States President Donald Trump to visit Moscow and that he was ready to travel to Washington for a new summit, AFP reported.

“We are ready for such meetings, we are ready to invite President Trump to Moscow,” Putin said at the BRICs summit in South Africa’s Johannesburg. “He has this invitation already and I told him about it”, according to CNN.

The Russian leader said telephone calls between Moscow and Washington were insufficient and that both sides needed to meet to talk about matters like the Iran nuclear deal and global conflicts. He also said that it was in the interests of Russia and the US to extend arms control treaties.

Putin said Russia has no plans to reject the US dollar. “We will use the dollar and we are not rejecting it,” Putin said, when asked if Russia plans to decrease its holdings of the US currency in its reserves.

Putin also praised Trump for keeping his promises to US voters. “You can critique him for what he does and many people do that but one thing is clear – he is willing to fulfil his campaign promises,” Putin said, adding that the recent summit was “useful.”

Putin’s invite comes after Trump last week asked his administration to formally invite Putin to visit America at the end of this year.

The two leaders met on July 16 in Finland’s capital Helsinki, where Putin rejected allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections. Trump declared he believed Putin’s claims that Russia had not interfered in the US presidential election. The remarks put him at odds with US intelligence over claims of Russian interference in 2016 election. But a day later, Trump said he misspoke during the summit. The White House on Wednesday denied that President Trump said Russia was no longer a threat to the United States.
