The Assam Police have registered a case against Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain for allegedly raping and threatening a 24-year-old woman in Assam’s Nagaon district, PTI reported on Friday. The case was filed after the woman lodged a complaint against Gohain on August 2.

Gohain has refuted the allegations and said that “truth will be revealed” soon. “Every time I am about to contest elections, such conspiracies are plotted against me,” he told ANI. “This happened in 2016 and 2011 as well.”

Sanjiv Goswami, who is the minister’s officer on special duty, said Gohain has filed a complaint against the woman and her family for allegedly blackmailing the minister. Goswami also claimed that the case against the minister has been withdrawn, PTI reported.

Officer in charge of Nagaon police station, Ananta Das, said the woman has requested to withdraw the case in court but the “case still stands… we will do our own investigation.” Superintendent of Police Shankar Barata told ANI that the woman sent a letter to the police, saying she did not want to pursue the case “But we’re taking all actions as per law,” he said.

An unidentified police officer said the First Information Report was filed under Sections 417 (cheating), 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. The woman has refused to undergo a medial examination, the officer said.

“The complaint says that the alleged incident took place seven to eight months ago,” the officer said, adding that Gohain and the woman knew each other.

Congress leader Pawan Khera on Friday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately sack Gohain from the Union council of ministers. “We demand from this government, from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah to take immediate and strict action against rape accused Minister Rajen Gohain, the Minister of State for Railways,” Khera said.
