Chief Justice Dattu convenes collegium for posts in high courts
The Supreme Court judges are expected to take a call on extending the term of about 30 judges of various high courts.
Chief Justice of India HL Dattu has called a meeting of a Supreme Court collegium to recommend names for various high courts, reported the Indian Express. A three-member collegium, including Dattu, is expected to take a call on extending the term of about 30 judges of various high courts. A Supreme Court bench on Friday had struck down the national judicial appointments act, which aimed to give the government a role in appointing judges. The court favoured a collegium system in which a few judges make the appointments. In a separate development, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley attacked the judiciary for striking down the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act, writing in a Facebook post that Indian democracy cannot be a “tyranny of the unelected”.
