J&K: Municipal councillor, police officer killed in attack by suspected militants in Sopore
The incident took place during a meeting of the urban local body.

A municipal councillor and a police officer were killed in an attack by suspected militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore town on Monday, the Kashmir Zone Police said.
The suspected militants opened fire at the municipal office in Sopore during a meeting of the urban local body, NDTV reported.
Councillor Riyaz Ahmad and police officer Shafqat Ahmad were killed, while another councillor was injured. Councillor Shamas Din has been moved to a hospital for treatment, reported Greater Kashmir.
The police officer killed in the attack was Riyaz Ahmad’s security guard, PTI reported. The police have cordoned off the area to arrest the accused.
National Conference leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack. “News coming in of a militant attack on the municipal office in Sopore,” he tweeted. “My unequivocal condemnation of this attack together with my sympathies for the deceased and prayers for the injured.”
Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu shared his “heartfelt condolences” to the families of the deceased.
