An announcement earlier in the day of the release date of the Akshay Kumar starrer Padman on January 26, 2018, caused come confusion about the fate of Shankar’s 2.0. The sequel to Endhiran (2010), which stars Rajinikanth, Amy Jackson and Akshay Kumar, was supposed to have been out on January 25, 2018. The possibility of two high-profile films, both featuring the same actor, seemed unlikely.

Tweets by Tamil industry trackers suggest that the release date for 2.0 is now April 13, 2018. This means that producer Lyca Productions has enough time to wrap up its visual effects and deliver the film in 3D, as promised.

Rajinikanth returns as the robot with extraordinary intelligence in 2.0. The movie has been made in Tamil and will be dubbed in several Indian languages. Its alleged budget of Rs 400 crores makes it imperative for Lyca Productions to target every singe available screen in every part of the country and in overseas territories.

The movie’s soundtrack, by AR Rahman, was released at an ostentatious ceremony in Dubai over the weekend. The release of 2.0 coincides with the Tamil New Year and summer vacations, and will ensure a long run in cinemas if it clicks with audiences.
