Get Out director Jordan Peele is producing an Amazon documentary series that aims to re-examine the story of Lorena Bobbitt, who made headlines in 1993 for cutting off her husband’s penis with a kitchen knife. Bobbitt alleged that her husband, John, had raped her and repeatedly battered her.
The four-part series will be directed by Joshua Rofe. Peele, who won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for last year’s Get Out, will serve as executive producer.
“The series will examine how the case laid the groundwork for the modern 24-hour news cycle and increasing sensationalistic media coverage,” Variety reported. “It will also explore the national discussion on domestic and sexual assault in America.
Lorena Bobbitt was acquitted on grounds of insanity in 1994. “When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle,” Peele said in a statement. “With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena’s story and we’re honored to help her tell it.”
Amazon described the series as a “groundbreaking re-investigation of the deep moral issues and painful human tragedies buried at the heart of this infamous American scandal”.
